- Prior to beginning a game, players must decide whether the skunk rule and double skunk rules apply. If these rules are applied then if one player wins the game before their opponent has reached 91 points then they win two games rather than one. If they win the game before their opponent has reached 61 points then this is known as a double skunk, and the winner will win four games.
- Before starting a game, a dealer must be determined. The dealer is determined by cutting the cards.
- When cutting the cards to determine the Cribbage dealer, the first person to cut has to remove at least the top four cards but no more cards than half the current deck. This is so that there is an appropriate number of cards remaining for any other players.
- The dealer of the first hand of Cribbage is determined by cutting the cards, and the player who cuts the highest card wins and will be the first dealer. Please note that in some games of Cribbage, the lowest card deals. Be sure to clarify this before cutting the cards. Aces are always low, and if the players both draw cards of the same rank they must reshuffle and cut again.
- Even when not dealing, any player can request to shuffle the cards. However the dealer has to shuffle the cards last.
- Cards are dealt out one at a time to each player, in a clockwise motion. The player to the left of the dealer gets the first card dealt.
- If the dealer exposes his own card during the deal, play continues as normal and the dealer will be at a disadvantage. If the dealer exposes an opponents card during the deal, the opponent will score 2 points and can request a new deal if he has not yet looked at his other cards.
- If a non-dealer player exposes one of his cards before the deal is complete, the dealer can choose to start a fresh deal assuming he hasn’t yet looked at his own cards.
- If the cards have been misdealt and it isn’t noticed until at least one hand has been looked at, then the non-dealer will receive 2 points, and the cards are to be taken back, shuffled and then redealt.
- If the dealer misdeals too many cards to a non-dealer, and the non-dealer hasn’t looked at his cards yet, then the non-dealer scores 2 points and there is a redeal. If the non-dealer has looked at their cards then there is still a new deal, but they don’t get the points.
- If the dealer has more than the correct amount of cards, then the non-dealer can choose to request a new deal, or to pick the cards for the dealer to discard.
- If either player is dealt too few cards, there must be a new deal.
- If the dealer deals out two cards at once to a player, then the player can request a new deal, or for the extra card to be removed and placed on top of the deck.
- If, after the hands have been dealt and picked up, you notice your opponent has too many, or too little cards, you can point this out and earn yourself 2 points and a fresh deal.
- When the cards have been dealt, the deck can not be touched until it is time to cut the cards. If any player touches the deck, even to move it to a more convenient place on the table, then their opponent scores 2 points.
- The non-dealer is to discard to the crib first, then the dealer discards. When cards are placed in the crib they cannot be picked up again.
- If at any point the player picks up the crib, even if they are confused and think they are picking up their own hand, then the other player scores 2 points and a new deal is required.
- When the non-dealer is cutting the cards to begin play, he must remove at least three cards from the top of the deck and leave four cards from the bottom of the deck. The dealer will then turn the top card up of the lower portion of the deck. This card is then placed face up on top of the full deck.
- If the turn-up card is a Jack, the dealer can score two points for “the right jack” or “his nobs”.Even if he is one point away from winning, he can get the two points here and win the game. Also the dealer must declare the two points before placing down any cards. If he doesn’t then the points are voided.
- If a player moves his peg too many points during any period of scoring, his peg must be reset to the correct spot based on the score he actually got. His opponent then adds the “mistaken” points to his own score.
- If a player touches his own pegs when not moving them to score points, or if he touches the peg of an opponent for any other reason than to correct an extra score, then he must forfeit 2 points.
- If a players pegs are removed from the game board then the opponent is the one that has to put them back in place. If the player disagrees with this then he forfeits ths game.
- If the peg which is leading gets displaced, then it must be placed one peg BEHIND the peg remaining on the board.
- If a player forgets to move his pegs to mark his score by the time the cards are back in the deck, then he forfeits the points.
- If a player states that he can’t “go” due to the total being close to 31 when he actually can go, then his opponent gets 2 points.
- If a player miscalculates his score during a game and states that he has won the game and puts his peg in the final “winning” hole – then that player forfeits the game.
- When counting your points you must put your cards flat on the table so that the opponent can see that your count is accurate. You must also state your total count out loud.
