What Is The PlayNow.com Scandal?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of years, you’ll have noticed that the major governments of the world have quite of bit of financial troubles. I won’t get into the details of it, but there is a lot of money that the major countries in the world and they need to find it in a hurry.

So, what does the Canadian Government to try and cut the deficit? In a novel move, they decided to start up their own online casino called PlayNow.com. In theory, it is quite a good idea. I think it’s quite good and, in their own words, they’ve decided that can’t “stand on the sidelines and lose revenue to the hundreds of offshore websites currently available to its residents.” So, it’s simply a case of: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

The thing is, it was only for residents in British Columbia over the age of 19, but the draw was that not only would the residents be doing their bit to secure the future of Canada’s economy, but it was run by the government – the people they voted for – not some “faceless” company that the users might not even know where they are based.

So, on paper, PlayNow.com was a good idea. It certainly ticked a lot of boxes and had a lot of hype surrounding it in British Columbia. There were even plans to start a poker website, too.

However… You knew that was coming, didn’t you? All that glitters and all that!

Well, PlayNow.com launched as planned on July 15th and then, just a couple of hours after the launch, PlayNow had crashed spectacularly. And since then, the site has been down for maintenance.

Now, the official line from PlayNow is that the server was simply overloaded by the amount of traffic, which was unexpected at the time. Definitely a believable reason for PlayNow to crash. Every new site has teething problems, so let’s leave it be, right?

Well, no, not really. You see, the extent of the problem was revealed the day after the crash. It turns out that some accounts of users were made public for people to see and that allegedly some funds were wagered that didn’t belong to those wagering it. A serious flaw, indeed.

You see, the government did come clean, but that was three days after the event, after the news was leaked just a day after and after their excuse that the site was “slow and unresponsive so had to be taken down for repairs,” was shot out of the water. And that was also after over 130 players had their supposedly secure information compromised.

With the issue of security a huge issue for online gamblers (and it’s one I get asked about all the time from website users), it’s the worst thing that could happen to PlayNow other than losing the government a small fortune. But it did cost them $7.3m, so if it does bomb because of this, that is a small fortune lost.

In all honesty, I wouldn’t blame online gamers to be wary of PlayNow because of this security issue. There are many, many casinos out there that are proven to be safe and secure and while they might not help reduce the deficit of Canada, you’ll know your money is safe, as well as your personal details.

So, for all you Canadians out there that were anxious to go and gamble at PlayNow, why not head to Bodog Casino instead? Not only is it one of our favorite casinos online, it’s also simply a great casino, a trusted name and one we’d recommend over the government funded casino.
