Pai Gow Poker started in the mid-80’s, making it a relatively new game to the casino world. Pai Gow Poker was created by combining the Chinese game Pai Gow with the traditional concepts of poker. Today, Pai Gow Poker is found at many online casinos, including Tower Gaming Casino.
In Pai Gow Poker, players are dealt seven cards. They have to make a two-card poker hand and a five-card hand from these cards. The two cards on top (“in front” or “on top” hands) make up the two-card hand and the five cards remaining are referred to as the “behind” or “bottom.” Each Pai Gow Poker table has a banker, which acts like a dealer in traditional poker. The Pai Gow Poker banker can either be a player or a casino staff member. The banker is determined by a roll of the dice. Once rolled, the number on the dice is used to count clockwise from the dice roller. The player at the end of the count is made the banker.

The best on top hand a player can have is a pocket pair or the best high card. The five cards in the bottom hand can make any hand combination. Some states such as Nevada declare an A-2-3-4-5 straight to be the second most powerful in the game, only behind an Ace-High straight (A-K-Q-J-10).
A player will win the pot if both of their hands beat the banker’s. The hand is considered a draw if both the dealer and player have a winning hand, in their on top and on bottom hands. If this happens, the chips will be left in the pot for the next hand. If either hand draws and the dealer has the better remaining hand, the house wins. This is the slight house advantage in Pai Gow Poker, in that any tie of an individual hand will go to the house.
