The Europeans champions, Spain, have been handed a gift in the form of Group H. Honduras, Chile and Switzerland? Vicente del Bosque would have struggled to pick a better group by himself. It should be a stroll in the park for Spain and the other three teams aren’t exactly in the kind of form that will see them have a great run.

The pundits are calling this the Group of Death, but if you’ve read my Group A preview, you’ll see that I think Group A might just be a bit less of a foregone conclusion than Group G. Let’s be honest, Group G has one winner and one winner only: Brazil. Then it looks like there’s one place to play for and it’s between two teams and, yes, they are two good teams, so it could be the group with the best matches to watch and possibly the most goals. In fact, there’s going to be a shed-load of goals if North Korea are actually as bad as some people might think.

Group E looks to be a fun group for the viewing public. We Dutch in this group who are guaranteed to play beautiful football. Now, while the rest of the teams might not play that standard of football, there could be a battle for second, as Japan, Denmark and Cameroon seem to be playing roughly on the same level and it should make for an interesting group, once the Netherlands demolish them all with a brand of football that puts them amongst the favorites to lift the trophy.

Group D is a very interesting group. It’s wide open if you’re of the belief that the German team has seen better days. And, as I am of that belief, there are three teams that could be vying for two spots in the second round, all with as good a chance as any.
Even the bookies thing it’s quite open, with the Germans just shades of odds-on to win the group, whereas Germany of old in a group featuring Ghana, Australia and Serbia would be a lot, lot shorter. I don’t think any of the games in the group will be relatively exciting and I think it will be a low scoring group, but don’t let that stop you from having a bet on it, as there’s some good value to be had there.

Perhaps just behind Group B in terms of being a weak group comes Group C. It’s a group that holds no fear for top seeds England and, as such, the lack of betting opportunities arise again because of the lack of competitiveness.

People are calling Group G the “group of death”, but I think we have to look past Group G and focus on Group A as the real “group of death.” While Group G has three strong teams that could all easily qualify and will pose a serious threat to each other, in Group A, all four teams are capable of qualifying. While they may not be as strong as the teams in Group G, France, Uruguay, South Africa and Mexico will all cause each other problems.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa has been a long time in the making. Well, it’s been 4 years since the last World Cup and, I’ll be honest, it’s felt like an eternity.
